Pope Clement VII, from his residence in Viterbo,
permitted Brothers Louis and Raphael Tenaglia from Fossombrone, with the Bull, Religionis Zelus, to live the hermetical life according to the Rule of St. Francis of Assisi. This allowed them to wear the Capuchin habit, to receive both clerical and non-clerical brothers, to wear the beard, and to withdraw themselves to a hermitage with the consent of the owner of the property and to live there. They could also beg, and to enjoy the privileges granted to the Order of Friars Minor and to the Camaldolese of St. Romuald of Ravenna.
It was thus that, on July 3, 1528, that the Order of Capuchin Friars Minor began their way of life. The Bull was first read and published in the Piazza of Camerino by Caterina Cybo, who was the duchess of Camerino and to whom,Brothers Louis and Raphael, had close ties. This date has always remained part of our history as a feast and a memory, because on the renovation of our Religious Profession, as St. Francis said “to do by the strength of Your Love, that which we know You desire and to want always what is pleasing to You, and to follow the footsteps of your Beloved Son”. |
